Posted by chief on 20 Oct 2008 | Tagged as: general

It seems hard to believe but Halloween is almost here….. The Executive office of Public Safety offers some tips HERE. Remember this is a rural community and our roads are dark and winding . If your child does go out Trick or Treating make sure they have a flashlight and some type of reflective material on their costume so that traffic can see them. Motorists, please remember that there are Trick or Treaters out there and SLOW DOWN. Parents- please remind your children that Halloween is a fun night- but vandalsim is not fun for anyone!  Don’t forget the Lions Club Rag Shag parade this Saturday afternoon at the East Meadow School.Have a safe and Happy Halloweeeen- don’t forget to stop at the Police Station for a Treat!           Now, where did I leave my costume……….

State Budget Cuts

Posted by admin on 19 Oct 2008 | Tagged as: general

As far as we know right now the major cut to the Police Department due to the Governor’s efforts will be in the area of Community Policing funds. Although the exact dollar amolunt of the cut is not know, it appears as if we will no longer be able to fund the Saturday School program at the High School. Our ride-a-long program we had hoped to continue will be abolished, and officers will not recieve training in Community Policing areas.

It is expected that the improvements will be made this Spring and  Summer. The grant totalled over $56,000, half of which is funded by a match from the School and Police Departments.

Hunting Season is here again…

Each year we get many calls about gunshots at the beginning of hunting season.  This is still a somewhat rural community and there are many legal places to hunt. If you feel the hunters are too close to your residence or on your property and you do not want them there, please feel free to contact the Police Department. The season for  opossums and raccoons is presently open.  The season for many other species (including grey squirrel, rabbits, pheasants, quail, and grouse), opens October 18th . The Massachusetts Fish and Wildlife Hunting Abstracts can be found here. Fall Turkey season opens October 27th, and Black bear  season opens November 3. No hunting is allowed on Sunday . Hunters are reminded that they can not discharge a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling or 150 feet of a road, nor can they remain on property that is posted or where they have been asked to leave. Also- all firearms MUST be locked when not in use ( free gun locks are available at the Police Department.
