Many people are confused about the rules concerning motor vehicle  inspections. As of Janury this year the new stickers will be RED in color. Upon passing the inspection a new sticker will be applied to the windshield. In the center is a number in black signifying the month the sticker expires.  If the vehicle is rejected due to  EMMISSIONS,  the sticker will have a black R in the center. The vehicle may be legally driven for 60 days. If the vehicle fails for safety there will be a red R in the center.  If the vehicle is operated prior to the safety repairs being made, the operator may be cited for the defects. Once the safety defects are repaired the vehicle can be driven up to 60 days from the date of  the original rejection. Before it is re-inspected.

Also. if you purchase a vehicle you MUST get it inspected within 7 days, even if it has a vaild sticker on it. This is to your benefit becasue you can void the sale , under some circumstances, if it fails inspection within the time limit.

As of October 2008  most trailers used for COMMERCIAL purposes must be inspected. If the trailer passes a DOT inspection in 2008, it does not have to be inspected until the DOT  inspection expires (1 year after inspection date). Once the vehicle passes the Mass inspection it will not require a DOT inspection.
