Earlier this evening a young moose was struck by a MV at the Belchertown line on Rte 202. Unfortunately the calf had to be destroyed due to its injuries. The apparent mother, who was also crossing the rodway, escaped uninjured.
We DO have a local moose population and they are very difficut to see at night. All the more reason to SLOW DOWN when driving. There are many moose related fatailities “up north” because when struck by a MV they tend to roll onto the hood of vehicles right through the windshield, due to their long legs. Adult moose can weigh over 1000 lbs!
