In late February of 2018 the Granby Police Department began investigating two sexual assaults that occurred in Town. The first incident occurred on February 23rd and the second on March 29th. In both incidents the women who were assaulted were left in Granby after being picked up by the suspect in a neighboring jurisdiction and driven to the same location in Granby where they were sexually assaulted. Granby Police, Detectives from Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, Holyoke Police, South Hadley Police, Belchertown Police and the personnel from Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan’ Office continued to actively and cooperatively investigate the incidents.
As part of the investigation, a press release was published requesting the public’s assistance with identifying a tow truck and the operator who was a suspect in the assaults. The press release prompted numerous tips from citizens. One of those tips directed the investigation toward a specific towing company and a suspect. The suspect’s name was entered into a DNA database and it was determined his DNA had been linked to a sexual assault that occurred in Granby in 2009.
The investigation developed a lead to another women who was identified as having been sexually assaulted by the suspect in Granby as well.
Arrest warrants for the suspect were applied for and granted by the Eastern Hampshire District Court on April 24th. The alleged suspect is 41 year old Arthur Salsbury of 48 Old Belchertown Road, Ware. Salsbury was arrested by the Granby Police with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Police and Ware Police.
These incidents are still actively being investigated. Anyone with information about these crimes or similar incidents are asked to call your local police department or the Granby Police Department at (413) 467-9222.
Salsbury is currently being charged with two counts of Aggravated Rape, three counts of Rape and two counts of Assault and Battery for incidents that occurred in Granby. Those charges are related to assaults involving three women.
Salsbury will be transported to the Hampshire County Sheriff’s Regional Lock up where he will be held until his arraignment on April 24, 2018 in the Eastern Hampshire District Court.
These incidents are still actively being investigated and other charges may be filed in the future. Anyone with information about these crimes or similar incidents are asked to call your local police department or the Granby Police Department at (413) 467-9222.
All of the agencies involved in the investigation would like to thank the public for their assistance in helping to bring this suspect to justice. As with all alleged crimes, the suspect is still presumed innocent until he is found guilty in court.
