Press Release

Granby Police Department Awarded Child Passenger Safety Grant

Grant Will Make Car Seats Available to Residents in Need

The Granby Police Department has recently been awarded a Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Grant that will be used to purchase car seats for distribution to local families in need. The Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, Office of Grants and Research- Highway Safety Division awarded grants totaling over $190,000 to 58 local police and fire departments, non-profit agencies, and hospitals. The Granby Police Department is one of over 235 car seat inspection sites in Massachusetts, with a certified technician(s) available to ensure children’s seats are installed correctly.

Nationwide, traffic crashes are a leading cause of death for children of all ages. Properly installed car and booster seats have been proven to reduce the risk of death and injury to children involved in crashes, yet the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that nearly 60 percent of all seats are installed incorrectly.

State law requires all children riding in passenger motor vehicles to be in a federally approved child passenger restraint that is properly fastened and secured according to the manufacturer’s instructions until they are 8 years old or over 57 inches tall. When children outgrow their booster seats, they must wear a seat belt.

This grant helps us better serve families who find it difficult to afford car and booster seats to protect their children. We can also assist parents and caregivers with the proper installation of their child’s seats. If you would like to schedule an appointment for inspection to ensure your seat is properly installed in your vehicle or for installation of a new seat, please the police department at (413)467-9222.

What is RAD?

The Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) System is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. It is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing to the basics of hands-on defense training.

RAD is not a martial arts program. Our courses are taught by certified RAD instructors and provide students with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire physical defense program for reference and continuous personal growth. The RAD System of physical defense is taught at many colleges and universities. The growing, widespread acceptance of this system is primarily due to the ease, simplicity and effectiveness of the tactics, solid research and unique teaching methodology.

The RAD Systems is dedicated to teaching women defensive concepts and techniques against various types of assault by using easy, effective and proven self-defense tactics. The system of realistic defense will provide the knowledge to make an educated decision about resistance.

RAD classes are offered at no charge.

Course Description

Twelve-hour basic physical defense class. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring water and snacks.

On October 19, 2018 at approximately 11:45, Granby Police, Fire, and Ambulance Personnel, were dispatched to the intersection of Amherst St. and Aldrich St. for what was reported as a motor vehicle crash with a vehicle on its side. While in route responders were advised that callers were now reporting that there were three people in the vehicle and one was unconscious. At this time, Granby Ambulance Personnel requested another paramedic ambulance from South Hadley District 1 and an Engine from South Hadley District 2 to come and assist as well.

Upon arrival, a Honda Element was observed on its side and several people were standing around the vehicle. Officers also observed a second vehicle, a silver Subaru with front end damage. It was learned from witnesses that the Honda Element was traveling south on Amherst St. when the vehicle left the roadway and went up an embankment and the vehicle rolled over at least two time and crashed in to the silver Subaru that was traveling northbound. The passengers from the Honda Element were transported to local hospitals for their injuries, the operator of the Honda Element had regained consciousness prior to being extricated from the vehicle. The operator of the Subaru was not injured. The crash is being investigated by the Granby Police.
