The Granby Police Department will provide free firearm safety kits to local residents through a partnership with Project ChildSafe, the nationwide firearms safety education program. The safety kits, which include a gun lock, will be distributed at the Granby Police Department on a first come, first serve basis.

Project ChildSafe, a program developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), has distributed more than 35 million firearm safety kits throughout the country since 2003. The program is funded by a U.S. Department of Justice grant, with additional funding provided by the firearms industry.

Each kit contains a safety curriculum and a cable-style gun lock. The locks fit on most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. The goal is to prevent a child or any other unauthorized person from accessing a firearm in your home.

By partnering with Project ChildSafe, the Granby Police Department is participating in a national effort to promote firearms safety education to all gun owners. Project ChildSafe will distribute gun lock safety kits to all 50 states and the five U.S. territories.

The Granby Police Department would like to advise citizens that cell phone numbers are going public this month and this means they can be released to telemarketers unless you register with the National Do Not Call Registry. The registration can be done two different ways and is very simple to do. You can call the following number 1-888-382-1222 and follow the prompts. In order to register a cell phone you must be calling from that cell phone. Or you can go to www.donotcall.gov and click on the link that says “register a phone number” enter the number or numbers (up to 3) and a valid e-mail address. As soon as you click the register button an e-mail will be sent to you. Open the e-mail and click on the link attached, this will finalize the registration. This registry has been available since 2008 for home phones and if you haven’t registered that phone, you can do so as well. For more information on the National Do Not Call Registry you can visit their website www.donotcall.gov .
