There will be a Massachusetts Boating Basics Course at the Granby Public Safety Complex 259 East State St., Granby on Feb 2, 9, 16, and 23 (Thursdays). Participants must attend all four classes, from 6:30 to 9pm.

Boat Massachusetts is offered to the public at no charge. The primary purpose of Boat Massachusetts is to foster safe boat operation through increased awareness of required safety equipment, safe boating practices and legal responsibilities. Students must be at least 12 years old.

            Youth 12 – 15 years of age who successfully complete the course will be issued a safety certificate allowing them to operate a motorboat without adult supervision, as required by state law. This course will also satisfy the state requirements for personal watercraft users who are 16 or 17 years of age. All graduates will be issued a Safety Certificate. Taking the class as a family is encouraged and has been proven to be highly rewarding.

On Saturday, January 21^st at approximately 05:18 Granby Police and Fire Personnel were dispatched to the area 49 Morgan St. for what was reported as a “fully engulfed structure fire” via a 911 call. Upon officers arrival they reported that the fire was located at 46 Morgan St. and that the only occupant of the house, at this time, and his dog were out of the house and safe. Granby Fire Personnel responded and extinguished the fire. South Hadley Fire Districts 1 and 2 were notified and provided an engine company. Westover’s Off-Base Fire Department sent an engine company to the Fire Station to provide coverage. Granby Police, Granby Fire and the Massachusetts State Police Fire Marshal’s Office investigated the fire and ruled that the cause of the fire was improper disposal of smoking materials.

There will be a Parking Ban in effect beginning tomorrow at 5 a.m. until further notice. This means that there is no on-street parking allowed.

The Granby Police Department announced today that officers will be out in full force over the next few weeks in a continued effort to increase seat belt use, in support of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. The increased patrols have been funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Highway Safety Division. The focus of the increased patrols is to combine extra traffic enforcement, provide public information, and community outreach to reduce motor vehicle-related fatalities, injuries and economic loss. The Granby Police Department wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday season and reminds everyone to celebrate the holidays responsibly.

Granby Police and Fire Officials responded to the East Meadow School at approximately 8:00AM for a non specific, non credible threat that was found written on a wall.  The threat was discovered before the school day started.  As a precaution students and staff, that began to arrive for the school day, were escorted to the gymnasium at the High School.  Police, Fire and school officials made several checks of the school as a precautionary measure.  Officials also conferred with members of the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Section.  At approximately 9:30 AM the school was deemed safe and the students and staff were allowed to return to the building.  The Granby Police Department is actively investigating the incident.

The Granby Police Department has been rewarded a grant in the amount of $1,200.00, from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, to participate in the 2012 Traffic Enforcement Program. The Program consists of three different mobilization periods over the next several months. The first mobilization, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, begins soon and runs through the holiday season. The Granby Police Department would also like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season, and to remind everyone to celebrate responsibly.

This storm recovery update is sent from the Granby Public Safety Complex.  Several National Grid tree removal crews began arriving this morning and started to remove trees and limbs that are entangled in the power lines.  National Grid line crews continued to repair lines and have restored power to some more areas in Town.    A debris drop off site has been established on the Kendall Street side of Dufresne Park.  Residents can drop off brush and tree debris that they’ve removed from their property. 

Residents are reminded that the shelter is still available at the High School. The shelter has food, cots, showers and charging capabilities. 

Currently Morgan Street is still blocked by a large tree and power lines.  West Street in Ludlow is also still blocked.  Residents may experience detours in different parts of Town. The detours are being used to allow tree and line crews to work more efficiently and safely.  Observing the detours will allow power crews to get power back faster. 

Please continue to stay away from downed power lines and assume that everything is live. Finally, please don’t hesitate to call the public safety complex at 467-9222 with any questions or concerns.

On a Code-Red message that was sent out earlier today to update Granby residents as to the progress of the storm response and recovery it was reported that most of the roads in Town have been cleared to support resident traffic. National Grid has been working on restoring the main transmission lines that feed electricity to the Town.  With that power has been restored to a few areas of Town. Unfortunately most of the Town is still without power. National Grid estimates that power may be out for up to three more days. They have also notified us that we can expect to see more tree and utility crews today and tomorrow.

Residents should know that due to a major power line coming down at the intersection of Amherst St. and Route 116, traffic through Route 116 has been blocked and residents should seek alternate routes.

Morgan St. is also blocked by downed trees and power lines. West St. in Ludlow, heading out of Granby is also blocked.

Unfortunately due to the large number of dangling trees and downed power lines Granby Public Safety Officials have decided it is not safe for residents and our children to be out Trick or Treating tonight.

Residents are reminded that a shelter has been established at the Granby High School, 385 East State St.. Showers are available for residents; however, residents must bring their own personal supplies and towels. Residents can also use the shelter to charge their cellular phones. Residents in need of water can fill water jugs at the Public Safety Complex at 259 East State St.

Residents looking to remove tree debris from their property are asked to keep debris on site for the time being. A debris drop off area will be announced in the near future.
